What Does the Tracker Do in Among Us?

In Among Us, the Tracker is a Crewmate role introduced in the June 2024 update, giving players the ability to place a tracking device on another player. This device lets the Tracker see the chosen player's movements on their map in real-time, helping to uncover Impostors by verifying alibis and spotting suspicious behavior.
How the Tracker Role Works
As a Tracker, you get a special ability to "track" another player. When you activate this ability on someone, a little marker appears on your map, showing you exactly where they are at all times. Think of it like a portable version of the Admin map, but focused on one person. This is super helpful because you don't have to stay in one spot to keep an eye on someone; you can go about your tasks while still monitoring your target.
The goal of the Tracker is to gather information for the Crewmates. If you suspect someone is an Impostor, tracking them can confirm your suspicions. For example, if they claim to have been in Electrical, but your tracker shows them lingering in Medbay, you've got solid evidence.
I remember one game where I was the Tracker and decided to put my device on a player who seemed a little too quiet. They kept saying they were doing tasks in one area, but my map clearly showed them wandering aimlessly near vents. When a body was reported near their claimed location, and they tried to pin it on someone else, I quickly used my tracking info to expose their lie. It felt great to catch an Impostor with concrete proof!
Tips for Being a Smart Tracker
Playing as the Tracker can really turn the tide for the Crewmates if you use your ability wisely. Here are some pointers:
- Track Suspicious Players: Your best bet is to target someone you already find a little sus. Maybe they're not doing tasks, or they're always alone. Tracking them can either clear their name or expose them.
- Verify Alibis: When a body is reported and players start giving their locations, check your map. If your tracked player's story doesn't match what you see, you've got valuable info.
- Spot Venting and Shapeshifting: The tracker can even show you if someone uses a vent or if they are a Shapeshifter. If you see your tracked target suddenly disappear and reappear in a different spot without walking, they might have vented. If they pass by you but suddenly look like someone else on your tracker, you just caught a Shapeshifter in action.
- Keep Your Role Secret: Just like other powerful Crewmate roles, it's often best to keep quiet about being the Tracker until you have solid evidence. Impostors will try to target you if they know you can track them.
- Track Hard-Clear Crewmates: Sometimes, it's useful to track a player you *know* is a Crewmate. If they suddenly stop moving and no body is reported, you can head to their last known location to check if they've been killed. This can also give you a timeline of where a body might be.
One time, I had a tough game where Impostors were really good at blending in. I put my tracker on a player I trusted, just to make sure they were safe and to see if anyone else was following them. Suddenly, their marker stopped moving in a hallway that was usually busy. I rushed there, found their body, and because I knew exactly where they died and who was nearby (thanks to my tracker and general map awareness), we were able to narrow down the suspects quickly. It really highlights how knowing where people are, even trusted ones, can be crucial.
It's also important to remember that communication sabotages will disable your tracker, so be aware of those moments. For more tips on playing with your friends and understanding game mechanics, check out our post on How to Play Among Us With Friends.
