How to Play the Imposter in Among Us

Playing as the Imposter in Among Us is all about deception, quick thinking, and cunning strategy to eliminate the Crewmates without getting caught. Your main goal is to reduce the number of Crewmates until they are equal to the number of Imposters, or to cause a critical sabotage that the Crewmates fail to fix in time. It's a game of lies, trust, and murder, where perfecting the art of not looking suspicious, but also not too innocent, is key to victory.
Master the Art of Deception
To be a truly great Imposter, you need to trick the Crewmates into thinking you're one of them.
Fake Tasks Properly
Since Imposters can't actually complete tasks, faking them is crucial for blending in and building an alibi. Stand at task locations for a realistic amount of time. Pay attention to how long actual tasks take; moving away too quickly from a long task can raise suspicion. It’s smart to leave just after the taskbar in the upper-left corner goes up, which makes it look like you contributed. Be careful with "visual tasks" like MedBay scans or clearing asteroids, as these show animations for Crewmates but not for Imposters, instantly giving you away if visual tasks are enabled.
I remember one game where I almost got caught faking the "Fix Wires" task. I stood there for what felt like ages, but the taskbar wasn't moving. Luckily, another Crewmate walked in, and I quickly moved to a different fake task, hoping they didn't notice my lack of "progress." It was a close call, and I learned to be more aware of the taskbar!
Vent Wisely
Vents are your secret pathways, allowing you to move quickly around the map, escape after a kill, or even set up multi-kills. However, using a vent is a huge giveaway if a Crewmate sees you. Always ensure the coast is clear before hopping in or out. You can even use vents to "vent body camp," killing a target, quickly venting away, and then popping back out to get another unsuspecting Crewmate.
Strategic Sabotage
Sabotage is one of your most powerful tools. It creates chaos, splits up Crewmates, and can even win you the game directly.
- Lights: Turning off the lights reduces Crewmate vision, making it easier to kill without witnesses.
- O2 Depletion or Reactor Meltdown (Critical Sabotages): These are timed events that require Crewmates to fix them quickly at different locations. If they fail, Imposters win. Calling a critical sabotage when there are only a few Crewmates left is a classic winning move, as it forces them to split up, leaving targets vulnerable.
- Doors: Locking doors can trap a Crewmate for a kill, or prevent others from reaching a body or an emergency meeting. You can even lock yourself in a room with a Crewmate and let them live to build trust, creating a temporary alibi.
- Comms Sabotage: This can disable security cameras and admin maps, hindering Crewmate investigation.
Outsmarting the Crewmates
Beyond individual actions, your social game is just as important.
Blend In and Manipulate Discussions
Act like a normal Crewmate: participate in discussions, ask questions, and even make accusations. Don't be too quiet, as silent players often become suspicious targets. When a body is reported, take the initiative to ask others about their whereabouts and tasks, steering the conversation to your advantage. You can even "self-report" a body you just killed, then try to blame another player, drawing suspicion away from yourself.
Create Alibis and Vouch for Others
Building trust is vital. If a Crewmate sees you "doing a task" or just traveling with them, they might vouch for you later, providing an alibi. You can also vouch for other Crewmates (or even your fellow Imposter, cautiously) to appear helpful and innocent.

Targeting Key Players
Some Crewmates are better at figuring out who the Imposter is. These "detectives" should be high-priority targets. Also, quickly eliminate anyone who has performed a visual task, as they have a confirmed alibi and can prove their innocence.
Winning the Game
You win when the number of Imposters equals the number of living Crewmates, or if Crewmates fail to fix a critical sabotage like O2 or Reactor Meltdown before the timer runs out. Sometimes, the game can come down to a tense final vote. I once won a game by convincing the last Crewmate that another innocent player was the Imposter, just after I'd made a risky kill. The timing of my accusation and the general chaos worked perfectly, and they voted the wrong person out!
Mastering the Imposter role in Among Us is all about combining cunning movements, strategic sabotages, and sharp social deception. Practice makes perfect, so keep honing your skills of misdirection and murder to become the ultimate space villain.
