What Does the Detective Do in Among Us?

The Detective is a Crewmate-style role in Among Us that helps solve murders by gathering clues and interrogating other players. This role was added in Update 17.0, released in September 2025. As a Detective, your main goal is to use your special abilities to figure out who the Impostors are and lead your fellow Crewmates to victory.
What the Detective Does
The Detective has two key abilities: Notes and Interrogate.
- Notes System: After a body is reported, a case file automatically pops up in your Detective notes. This file tracks important info like the victim's name and where their body was found. You can also add if you think a special Impostor type, like a Shapeshifter or Viper, was involved. This helps you organize clues for each murder. You can switch between different cases in your notes to focus on one murder at a time.
- Interrogate Ability: This is your most powerful tool. You can question other Crewmates to find out where they were at the time of a specific murder. By default, you can interrogate three players per case, but this can change depending on the lobby settings (it can be set from two to four). It's important to use your interrogations wisely, targeting suspicious players first to get the most useful information. If you interrogate someone and they were in the same spot as the reported body, they'll have some serious explaining to do!
I remember one game where I was Detective and someone reported a body in Electrical. I interrogated two players, and one of them, "Green," said they were also in Electrical. During the meeting, Green tried to say they were doing a task, but their story didn't quite add up with the timing of the kill. My notes helped us connect the dots and ultimately vote out Green, who turned out to be the Impostor. It felt pretty good to piece it together like that!
How to Play as a Detective
Playing as a Detective means you're a super-sleuth for the Crewmates. Here’s how to use your role to your advantage:
1. Stay Alert: Pay close attention to who is where and what they are doing. Every bit of information can be a clue.
2. Use Your Notes: As soon as a body is reported, open your notes and mark down the location. This helps keep track of everything, especially in games with many kills.
3. Strategic Interrogations: Don't just interrogate anyone. Focus on players who seem suspicious, were near the body's location, or have inconsistent alibis. Cross-check their answers with other information you have.
4. Work with Others: Share your findings during emergency meetings. While you have special info, you still need to convince other Crewmates. The Tracker role is a great partner for the Detective, as they can also see player locations and help confirm alibis.
5. Be Sneaky: Impostors will want to get rid of you! Try to keep your role a secret for as long as possible so you can gather more evidence without becoming an easy target.
What to Watch Out For
- Viper Impostors: If a Viper Impostor kills a Crewmate, the body can dissolve over time, leaving no body to report. This makes it almost impossible for the Detective to gather initial clues.
- Shapeshifters: If a Shapeshifter kills while disguised, it can throw off your investigation. However, a helpful tip is that Detectives cannot interrogate shapeshifted players, which can sometimes reveal who the Shapeshifter is.
- Lying Impostors: Impostors will lie about their location during interrogations or emergency meetings. Use your notes and critical thinking to spot inconsistencies. I once interrogated someone who claimed to be in the engine room, but I had just seen them leave Security right before the body was reported in MedBay. That quick contradiction was a major red flag!
Being a Detective in Among Us adds a whole new layer of strategy and makes the social deduction even more intense. It's a high-stakes, high-reward role where a good Detective can easily turn the tide for the Crewmates.
