How to Upgrade Ashes in Elden Ring

Upgrading your Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring is a great way to make your ghostly companions stronger and more helpful in battle. To do this, you need to find a character named Roderika and help her out. After you complete her short quest, she will be able to upgrade your ashes in exchange for special plants called Gloveworts.

I remember when I first started playing, I completely ignored my Spirit Ashes. I thought they were just a novelty. It wasn't until I was getting repeatedly crushed by a boss that I decided to try upgrading them. I’d picked up a bunch of these things called Grave Gloveworts without knowing what they were for. After a quick search, I found out about Roderika. I had actually walked right past her earlier in the game without a second thought! Finding her and upgrading my Lone Wolf Ashes made a huge difference. Those wolves went from being a minor distraction to a serious threat, giving me the opening I needed to finally beat that boss.

How to Find Roderika and Upgrade Your Ashes

Ready to give your spectral pals a boost? Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started:

1. Find Roderika: You'll first meet Roderika at the Stormhill Shack in Limgrave. It’s a small, ruined building not too far from the Stormveil Castle gate. Talk to her, and she’ll give you the Spirit Jellyfish Ashes. Make sure you exhaust all her dialogue options.

2. Get the Chrysalids' Memento: Inside Stormveil Castle, you'll find a key item called the Chrysalids' Memento. It's located on a pile of bodies in a room with a Grafted Scion.

3. Give her the Memento: Go back to Roderika at the Stormhill Shack and give her the memento.

4. Meet her at Roundtable Hold: After you’ve rested at a Site of Grace, Roderika will move to the Roundtable Hold. You’ll find her standing near the fireplace.

5. Talk to Roderika and Smithing Master Hewg: Talk to both Roderika and the blacksmith, Hewg, multiple times. You'll need to go back and forth between them, relaying their messages. Eventually, Roderika will move to the spot opposite Hewg and open up her Spirit Tuning services. I almost missed this part because I didn't realize I had to act as a go-between for them; I just kept resting, hoping she would move on her own!

Once she’s set up, you can talk to her to upgrade your ashes. You'll need specific items called Gloveworts. There are two types:

Just like with weapon upgrades, the cost in Gloveworts and Runes will increase with each level. For more information on upgrading your companions, check out our guide on how to upgrade summons in Elden Ring.
