How to Type in Among Us

It's super important to be able to talk to your crewmates (or lie to them!) in Among Us. Whether you're trying to figure out who the Impostor is or just having fun, typing is how you get your message across.
The quick answer to how to type in Among Us is to make sure you have "Free or Quick Chat" enabled in your game settings and that you are logged into a full Among Us account. If you're using Quick Chat Only, you won't be able to type custom messages.
Among Us is all about talking things out. When someone calls an emergency meeting or reports a body, a chat window pops up. This is your chance to share what you saw, where you were, or who looked a little "sus." If you're on PC or mobile, you'll see a chat icon, usually a speech bubble. Tapping or clicking this brings up your keyboard, and you can type away. On consoles like PS5, you often press a specific button (like R2) to open the chat keyboard.
Free Chat vs. Quick Chat
Among Us has two main ways to chat: Quick Chat and Free Chat.
- Quick Chat is like a menu of pre-written phrases. You pick from a list of common things to say, like "Who?" "Where?" or "I was in electrical." It's fast and easy, especially for younger players or if you're in a hurry. It also helps keep conversations safe by limiting what can be said.
- Free Chat is what you want if you want to type anything you want, just like a regular text message. This lets you be more detailed, make jokes, and really strategize with your teammates.
Sometimes, I jump into a game and forget that my settings are on Quick Chat. I'll see someone vent, rush to type "Red vented in electrical!" and then realize I can only pick from "Sus" or "Where?" It's a little frustrating, but it's an easy fix once you know how to switch it.
How to Enable Free Chat
To unlock the ability to type freely, you'll need to make sure Free Chat is enabled. Here’s how:
1. Log In: You need to be logged into a full Among Us account. Guest accounts usually only get Quick Chat.
2. Open Settings: From the main menu, click or tap the gear icon (Settings).
3. Go to Data: In the Settings menu, look for the "Data" tab and select it.
4. Change Chat Type: Find the "Chat Type" option. Here, you can switch between "Quick Chat Only" and "Free or Quick Chat". Make sure you select "Free or Quick Chat."
If you don't see the Free Chat option, or if it's grayed out, it might be because of your account's age. Free Chat is usually available for players aged 13 or older, as confirmed by the game's "digital consent age" policy. If you've previously entered an age under 13, you might need to adjust your account settings or even reinstall the game and re-enter your birthdate to an age 13 or older.
I remember one time, my little cousin couldn't figure out why he couldn't type in Among Us. He was getting so mad! It turned out his account was set to under 13, and he was stuck with Quick Chat. Once we helped him set up a proper account with the correct age, he was able to type whatever he wanted and suddenly became a much better Impostor (or crewmate, depending on the round!).

Being able to type freely makes the game much more engaging and lets you fully experience the fun of tricking your friends or catching the Impostor red-handed. So get those chat settings sorted and start communicating!
If you want to grab some cool cosmetic items or other in-app purchases in Among Us, you can easily use gift cards. Playstorm lets you earn various gift cards, like Google Play or Apple App Store cards, just by playing free games. You can then use these to make your purchases in Among Us and look extra stylish while saving your crew (or sabotaging them!).
