How to Turn Off Quick Chat in Among Us

Having trouble typing out your sneaky accusations or clever defenses in Among Us? You're probably stuck in "Quick Chat" mode. While you can't totally turn off the Quick Chat feature, you can switch to "Free Chat" instead, which lets you type whatever you want. This guide will walk you through how to make that switch, no matter if you're on mobile or PC.
Among Us offers two main chat modes: Quick Chat and Free Chat. Quick Chat uses pre-set phrases, which can be fast for simple messages but really limits what you can say. Free Chat, on the other hand, lets you type anything you want, making discussions much more detailed and fun. This is super important for games where communication is key to figuring out the Impostor (or being one!).
Why You Might Be Stuck with Quick Chat
The main reason some players are limited to Quick Chat is their age. If you're under 13, or if you're playing on a guest account, Among Us usually keeps you in Quick Chat to keep things safe. To use Free Chat, you generally need to be 13 or older (or have a parent's permission) and be logged into a full Among Us account.
I remember one time I was playing with my younger cousin, and he kept getting frustrated because he couldn't type out his long explanations. He was trying to say he saw someone vent but could only pick "I was with [color]" from the Quick Chat wheel. That's when I realized he was on a temporary account, which restricts you. It's a good safety feature, but definitely a bit annoying when you want to actually chat!
How to Switch to Free Chat
There are a few ways to get out of Quick Chat and into Free Chat.
Through the Game Settings
This is often the quickest way to check your overall chat preference.
1. Launch Among Us on your device.
2. From the main menu, look for the little cog icon (which looks like a gear) at the bottom right and click it to open Settings.
3. Go to the "Data" tab at the top of the Settings menu.
4. Find the "Chat Type" option. It will likely say "Quick Chat" or "Quick Chat Only."
5. Tap or click on it to switch it to "Free Chat."
6. Close the settings. Now you should be set to use Free Chat in any lobby that allows it!
When Creating a Game
If you're hosting a game, you can set the chat type for your specific lobby.
1. From the main menu, click "Play," then "Online."
2. Select "Host" and then "Create Game."
3. Before confirming your game settings, look for the "Chat Type" option.
4. Change it from "Quick Chat Only" to "Free Chat."
5. Start your game, and everyone in your lobby (who is eligible for Free Chat) will be able to type freely.
When Joining a Public Game
You can also filter public lobbies to only show ones that allow Free Chat.
1. From the main menu, click "Play," then "Online."
2. Select "Public" and then "Find Game."
3. At the top, you'll see filter options. Look for "Chat Type."
4. Tap or click it to switch it to "Free Chat."
5. Refresh the game list if needed. Now, the lobbies you see should support Free Chat, allowing you to type your messages.
It's a good idea to remember that if you're trying to join a friend's game, and they're using Free Chat but you're still stuck, it could be your account settings. I had this happen when I was playing with a group. My friend kept asking why I was only sending preset messages, and I couldn't figure it out until I checked my own game settings. Turns out, I had accidentally switched it back to Quick Chat when I was messing around with some other options. Once I changed it in the Data tab, it was smooth sailing and I could finally accuse Red properly!
