How to Disable Quick Chat on Among Us

Among Us is all about talking, strategizing, and trying to figure out who the Impostor is. Sometimes, the game's "Quick Chat" feature can feel a bit limiting. If you're looking to type out your thoughts freely instead of picking from pre-set phrases, you're in the right place.
The short answer is: you can't completely disable Quick Chat, but you can switch to "Free Chat" mode. This lets you type whatever you want. To do this, you need a full Among Us account and must be old enough, usually 13 years or older, to meet the game's age requirements for free chat.
What is Quick Chat?
Quick Chat was added to Among Us to make communication faster and safer, especially for younger players. It gives you a wheel of pre-written phrases you can choose from, sorted into groups like accusations, locations, and tasks. For example, you might pick "I was in Electrical" or "Red is Sus." It's great for quick info, but not so much for detailed discussions or sharing jokes.
I remember the first time I got stuck in a Quick Chat lobby without realizing it. We were trying to catch an Impostor, and I had a really specific observation about someone faking a task. But all I could do was select "I saw them" or "Where?" It was so frustrating because I couldn't explain the full picture, and we ended up losing that round! It made me really appreciate being able to type freely.
Why You Might Want Free Chat
While Quick Chat has its uses, Free Chat opens up a whole new world of communication in Among Us. It lets you:
- Be more specific: Instead of just saying "Sus," you can type "Blue was following me too closely and didn't do tasks."
- Strategize better: You can plan complex moves with your crewmates or trick others as an Impostor with detailed explanations.
- Have more fun: Jokes, custom names, and more natural conversations make the game more enjoyable.
- Catch sneaky Impostors: Sometimes, a unique turn of phrase or an odd detail in someone's typing can give them away. Quick Chat can't really do that.
If you're under 13, the game's rules mean you can only use Quick Chat to keep you safe. Your age is set when you create your Among Us account.
How to Switch to Free Chat
If you meet the age requirements and have a full Among Us account, turning on Free Chat is pretty easy. Here’s how you do it:
1. Launch Among Us: Open the game on your device (PC, mobile, Nintendo Switch, etc.).
2. Go to Settings: On the main menu, look for the little cog (gear) icon, usually in a corner of the screen, and click it. This opens the Settings menu.
3. Select the "Data" Tab: In the Settings menu, you'll see different tabs like "General," "Graphics," and "Data." Click on "Data."
4. Change Chat Type: Find the "Chat Type" option. It might say "Quick Chat Only" right now. Click on it to switch it to "Free Chat" or "Free or Quick Chat."
5. Exit Settings: Close the Settings menu. Your changes should be saved.
You can also set the chat type when you are hosting a new game or searching for public games. When creating a game, look for the "Chat Type" setting in the lobby options and switch it to "Free Chat." When joining public games, you can often use filters to only show lobbies that have "Free Chat" enabled.
After I finally made sure my account had the right age, I immediately went to the settings to switch. It was such a relief to see "Free Chat" light up! Being able to type "I definitely saw Red vent near Admin, watch the security footage!" instead of just pointing fingers made a huge difference in how much I enjoyed the game.
If you find the "Free Chat" option is grayed out or you can't select it, it usually means one of two things: you're not logged into a full Among Us account, or your account doesn't meet the age requirement for Free Chat. In some cases, you might need to make sure your game is updated to the latest version.
If you want to make in-app purchases to customize your Among Us experience with cool hats or pets, you can use Playstorm to redeem Apple/Google Play gift cards. We also offer Nintendo eShop vouchers if you're playing on Switch!
