How to Get Wishes in Genshin Impact

Getting wishes in Genshin Impact is all about gathering the right currencies and using them wisely. Simply put, you need "Fates" to make a "Wish," which is how you get new characters and weapons. There are two main types of Fates: Acquaint Fates and Intertwined Fates. You mostly get these by converting Primogems, or sometimes directly through gameplay or special shops.
To get wishes in Genshin Impact, you mainly need two special items: Acquaint Fates (blue) and Intertwined Fates (pink/rainbow). These Fates are used in the "Wish" system to get new characters and weapons. While you can sometimes earn Fates directly, the most common way is to collect Primogems and exchange them for Fates in the in-game shop.
Understanding Fates: Acquaint vs. Intertwined
Before you start wishing, it's good to know the difference between the two types of Fates:
- Acquaint Fates (Blue): These are used for the "Standard Wish" banner and the "Beginner's Wish" banner. The Standard Wish features a permanent pool of characters and weapons, but it doesn't have special rate-ups for new characters.
- Intertwined Fates (Pink/Rainbow): These are for the "Character Event Wishes" and "Weapon Event Wishes". These banners are time-limited and feature specific new characters or weapons with boosted drop rates. If you have a specific character in mind, you'll almost always want to use Intertwined Fates on their event banner.
It's usually recommended to spend your Primogems on Intertwined Fates because the limited-time character banners offer a better chance to get specific powerful characters.
How to Get Primogems
Primogems are the main currency you'll convert into Fates. You can earn them in many ways:
1. Daily Commissions: Completing your four daily commissions and reporting back to Katheryne gives you a reliable 60 Primogems every day. This is a consistent way to slowly save up.
2. Quests: Finishing Archon Quests (main story), Story Quests (character-specific), and World Quests often rewards Primogems. Some Hangout Events also offer Primogems for completing different endings.
3. Exploration: As you explore the vast world of Teyvat, you'll find treasure chests, solve puzzles, and unlock Waypoints or Domains. Each of these can give you a small amount of Primogems. My personal experience exploring Dragonspine was a huge primogem boost, those hidden chests really add up even if they only give a few gems each!
4. Spiral Abyss: This is a challenging combat area that resets twice a month. Clearing floors, especially the later ones, can give you hundreds of Primogems. It's a great source for experienced players.
5. Events: Genshin Impact frequently hosts limited-time events that offer generous Primogem rewards. Always participate in these!
6. Achievements: There are hundreds of achievements in the game, and many of them grant Primogems when completed.
7. Character Trials: When new 5-star characters are featured on banners, you can usually try them out in a special trial. Completing these trials gives you 20 Primogems.
8. Maintenance & Update Rewards: Sometimes, the developers send out Primogems as compensation for game maintenance or as celebration for new updates. Check your in-game mail!
9. Redeem Codes: MiHoYo, the creators of Genshin Impact, occasionally release codes during live streams or special events that can be redeemed for Primogems and other goodies.
Using Masterless Stardust and Starglitter
Beyond Primogems, you can also get Fates using two other special currencies that come from wishing:
- Masterless Stardust: You get Stardust every time you pull a 3-star weapon from a wish. You can exchange Stardust in "Paimon's Bargains" for up to 5 Acquaint Fates and 5 Intertwined Fates each month. It's a great way to get a few extra wishes regularly.
- Masterless Starglitter: This is rarer. You get Starglitter when you pull a 4-star or 5-star weapon, or a duplicate of a character you already own. Starglitter can be exchanged for Fates (both types) without a monthly limit, and you can even buy certain 4-star characters and weapons from the shop. I remember saving up my Starglitter specifically for an Intertwined Fate to get a character I really wanted, and it felt like a real accomplishment after getting so many duplicate weapons!
Tips for Efficient Wishing
- Save Your Primogems: Don't spend Primogems on Acquaint Fates or the Standard Banner unless you truly understand what you're doing. It's usually best to save them for Intertwined Fates to use on character event banners.
- Don't "Build Pity" Carelessly: "Pity" is a system that guarantees you a 5-star item after a certain number of wishes. Some players try to "build pity" on banners they don't care about, hoping to get a 5-star character on a future banner. This can backfire if you accidentally get a character you don't want.
- 10-Pulls vs. Single Pulls: While you can do single wishes, doing a "10-pull" (using 10 Fates at once) guarantees at least one 4-star item. This makes 10-pulls generally more efficient.
- Explore All Content: New areas, quests, and events are your best friends for accumulating Primogems quickly. Make sure you're always exploring and completing new content.
