How Old is Lumine in Genshin Impact?

Lumine, one of the two main characters players can choose in Genshin Impact, has an age that's a bit tricky. While she appears to be a teenager, likely between 14 and 17 years old, her true age is far, far greater, easily spanning thousands of years, and possibly much more. This is because Lumine is an ancient, interdimensional traveler.
When you first start Genshin Impact, you pick either Lumine or her twin brother, Aether, to be your main character, often called the Traveler. They both look like young adults, but their backstory tells a much longer tale. They aren't from Teyvat, the world where Genshin Impact takes place. Instead, they've journeyed across countless worlds before arriving.
I remember starting the game and just seeing this bright, energetic girl. I figured she was probably just a regular teen adventurer who got lost. It wasn't until I dug deeper into the lore that my mind was kind of blown, realizing she's actually seen so much more than anyone else in Teyvat.
More Than Just a Teenager: Lumine's True Age
Lumine's youthful looks are deceiving. The game's story hints strongly that she is incredibly old, possibly even immortal. One of the biggest clues comes from the Cataclysm, a major event that destroyed the nation of Khaenri'ah about 500 years before the start of the game. Lumine and her twin were trying to leave Teyvat during this event but were stopped and separated by an unknown god.
After this separation, the playable Traveler (Lumine, in this case) was put into a deep sleep or stasis for roughly 500 years. Her twin, however, woke up much earlier and became involved in Teyvat's history during that time. Even after waking up, neither twin has physically aged, suggesting they are immune to the normal passage of time. This idea is similar to her brother's mysterious background, which you can learn more about in our post on How Old is Aether in Genshin Impact?.
The true depth of Lumine's age goes even further back than 500 years. Lore descriptions, like those found on the "Wings of Descension" glider, mention that the Traveler has "seen the birth and death of stars" across their journeys. This suggests an age that could be millions or even billions of years old, making her one of the oldest, if not *the* oldest, characters in the entire game. Even a fortune teller in Sumeru was shocked to see that the Traveler is set to live for tens of thousands more years, implying a current age of around 5,000 years, at least.
I remember my friends and I having long discussions about this "birth and death of stars" line. We'd try to figure out what it truly meant. Did she literally watch stars form and die out? That's such a massive scale of time it almost doesn't make sense for a character who looks like she could be in high school! It just makes her story so much more interesting.
So, while Lumine might look like a teenager, her actual age is a mystery rooted in ancient history and interdimensional travel. She is an ancient being with a vast past, making her journey through Teyvat even more compelling.
